brief au background
warnings: death, forced prositution

◉ Born into the coal-mining area of District 12, to a family that was poor but managing to survive thanks to her father.
◉ Her father dies when she's eleven years old in a mining accident, her mother slips into depression and refuses to do anything
◉ Faced with the real possibility of starvation, Katniss learns to hunt. But only after Peeta Mellark, the baker's son, saves her by tossing her a loaf of burnt bread.
◉ At the age of sixteen, her sister Prim is reaped for the annual Hunger Games. She volunteers to take her place.
◉ In the arena, Peeta claims to be in love with her. Eventually, she pretends to be in love with him too, except he wasn't pretending.
◉ The gamemakers make a decree: if there are two tributes from one District, they can both survive.
◉ And when Katniss and Peeta eventually win, that rule is retracted for maximum drama amongst the audience.
◉ Peeta Mellark raises the knife he was holding to throw it away. Katniss sees this and raises her bow, thinking that he's about to attack.

And in this universe:

◉ She shoots him. It happens so fast she doesn't even understand how. The knife falls as it was originally intended to. She understands.
◉ Peeta dies gasping, and Katniss cries and begs him not to go.

In this universe, the 74th Hunger Games has only one victor. So, what happens next?

◉ She's whisked off into the world of the Capitol and becomes one of their victors.
◉ The rebels, waiting in secret, do not find the symbol they were looking for in her. Instead of the selfless girl-warrior, she's only a ruthless killer like the rest of them. The revolution has to wait.

◉ A few months after winning the Games, President Snow sells her body to a rich Capitol citizen, like he does with every other young and attractive Victor ( ask Finnick Odair why he's so haunted ). Katniss fights against it, but they threaten her sister's life if she refuses, so she has to. There's no other choice.

◉ Victors are something of a commodity: they attend parties when they're told to, and having a Victor grace your event is like having a celebrity drop in. People pay her a lot of money to be there. Katniss hates parties.

◉ She's popular amongst Capitol citizens, almost as popular as Finnick is. There's a waiting list to buy her.

◉ A year rolls around, and Katniss has to mentor other District 12 children to the slaughter. They're nothing like her. They don't know how to hunt. She watches them die and tries not to cry because there are always so many cameras trained on her face.

◉ Every night she has nightmares about killing Peeta, and one day she realizes that she doesn't quite remember what he looks like.

◉ She is not allowed to leave the Capitol, or return to District 12. Maybe it's for the better. She thinks they probably all hate her anyway. The heartless bitch of the supposed star-crossed lovers, to kill a boy so pure like that. ( And Katniss knows: if she could go back she'd do something different. Die instead. But she can't. )

◉ This becomes her life: a routine, despite everything. Attend Capitol parties, mentor young children to be sent to their deaths. Fuck President Snow's clients. Forget what it's like to not be perfectly trimmed and manicured and outfitted all the time. Forget what being in the forest feels like.

◉ The revolution has to wait, but it isn't gone just yet. In the community of Victors, there's a whisper rising. Of District 13, and how it might not be so dead after all.
